Question: What about Jesus’ death and resurrection is overlooked?

In John 19:38-42, we see overlooked truth related to His burial. Verses 38-40 say this: “And after this Joseph of Arimathaea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate gave him leave. He came therefore, and took the body of Jesus. And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight. Then took they the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen clothes with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury.”
The gospel of Luke shows Jesus drawing people to Himself even during the time of death and execution. This passage shows Jesus drawing people to Himself even after His death. The two men who take responsibility for caring for Jesus’ body in burial are most unexpected.
Joseph of Arimathaea and Nicodemus were both followers of Jesus, but secretly. Why would someone follow Jesus secretly? And why would they choose to reveal their secret after Jesus’ death?
Why was Joseph a secret disciple? The passage says it was due to fear of the Jews. The Bible says “fear of man brings a snare.” He was among the leaders, but did not consent to Jesus’ crucifixion. To fear people over Jesus was a sad mistake on his part, and I believe he saw this now.
Why did he step up now? What happened to Jesus was used by God to show him the fruitlessness of trying to please man. He had the ability to help - he was an honorable man (Mark 15:43); he was a rich man (Matt. 27:57) and he had access to Pilate.
Nicodemus had come to Jesus by night in John 3, trying to keep his questioning secret, but now also saw how foolish it was to hide. These men had hidden their faith in Jesus before, but if you had asked them after Jesus’ death, they would have said that they wished they had stood up for Him earlier.
We live in a day when more and more people who claim to be Christians do so secretly from our punishing world and corrosive culture. Fewer and fewer seem to darken the door of churches where they can be fed spiritually according to recent polls. We need people with courage to stand for Christ. When you get to the end of your life and eternity, you will wish you had done more, said more and stood strongly for the Lord Jesus!
